Every finance app has the same abandonment curve: people categorise diligently for eleven days and stop. Opening an app is more friction than the entry is worth.
So the capture surface is a thread already open all day. Photograph the receipt on the way out of the shop; extraction, categorisation and reports happen without opening anything.
Receipts are a hostile input format
Creased, photographed at an angle, on fading thermal paper, laid out differently by every till. Reading characters is easy; deciding which number is the total is the hard half.
Categorisation belongs to the person
The same purchase is groceries for one person and a business cost for another. Categories adapt to the individual and stay correctable in one message.
The whole interface budget is one message
There is no screen to fall back on. Every feature has to fit in a thread without becoming a menu tree slower than the app it replaced.
Regional formats, plural currencies
Latin American receipts carry local tax identifiers and currencies that move against each other. A ledger that silently mixes them is worse than none.
